“They multiply like rabbits!”
We have raised rabbits over 15 yrs. and often hear adults allude to that old expression and cliché. Actually I  seldom find  anything that fits that description. However, when you raise rabbits you will meet some people that actually believe your rabbits continuously have litters of bunnies uncontrollably!  We enjoy telling others about our work raising pedigreed purebred show rabbits! Our rabbits live in their own hutches with controlled diets and well managed schedules. They are healthy and have clean fur coats free of fleas, ticks, mites, and are safe from predators.  Domestic rabbits are totally different from the wild rabbit varieties that raid the garden and hide from stalking predators when they are not multiplying. To “multiply like rabbits” is not as impressive when you know a flea lays 50 eggs a day, a fruit fly lays 500 eggs at a time and a single pair of rats can multiply more than 15, 000 descendants in a year! However, the crown goes to the queen termite that lays 30,000 eggs a day every day. Now that’s multiplication!
In fact, “multiplying like termites” is impressive and very thought provoking. Will it become a “catchy phrase” or a popular cliché in time?  That is entirely up to you and what you like to have around the house!
